When Benny Gantz, a member of Israel’s war cabinet, met David Cameron, Britain’s foreign secretary, in London on Wednesday, he got a sharp message that Israel must do more to allow humanitarian aid to flow into Gaza. It was the kind of minister-level meeting that would normally draw modest attention amid the flurry of high-level diplomacy that has enveloped the Israel-Hamas war. But Mr. Gantz and Mr. Cameron are no mere functionaries. Mr. Gantz, a former chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces, is a popular political rival of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Mr. Netanyahu expressed deep displeasure at what he viewed as an unsanctioned trip by a would-be Israeli leader. Mr. Cameron, a former prime minister, has enjoyed uncommon latitude as foreign secretary, speaking out forcefully on issues like Gaza and the war in Ukraine on international trips, where he is often treated as though he were still in his old job.

Biden called Netanyahu's war in Gaza "over the top" last week. Meanwhile, the US Congress is on the cusp of approving another $14 billion in aid to Israel. On Thursday last week, Biden publicly called Israel's response in Gaza "over the top." During a phone call in January, Biden asked Netanyahu to prepare for a post-conflict resolution, including a two-state solution. Netanyahu publicly rejected the idea on social media, saying Israel would "not compromise on full Israeli control" of Gaza after the war.

In an episode of life imitating art, several stars of popular Israeli spy-thriller series “Fauda” are volunteering and being called up as reservists in the conflict with Hamas. “Fauda,” available on Netflix, concerns an Israeli undercover team hunting down Palestinian terrorists operating in the West Bank and Gaza. It tries to bring nuance and humanity to characters on both sides and has been particularly popular in the United Arab Emirates, Lebanon and Jordan. Among other “Fauda” actors who showed up for reserve duty were Tzachi Halevi, Idan Amedi and Yaakov Zada Daniel. “This is not a scene from “Fauda,”’ Amedi said in a video posted to X.

New York CNN —Airlines scrambled to cancel flights into Israel early Saturday after Palestinian militants launched a surprise attack, firing thousands of rockets from Gaza into nearby Israeli towns during a Jewish holiday. German airline Lufthansa also announced on Saturday it would drastically reduce flights to Tel Aviv. The safety of our guests and crew members has top priority for Lufthansa,” airline representatives wrote. News reported on Saturday Swiss Air, Austrian Airlines and Turkish Airlines had canceled flights to and from Israel. El Al, Israel’s national airline, said customers “may suspend flights without charge or cancel with a voucher without costs,” and set up an emergency hotline for customers who need to change their flights.

JERUSALEM, July 20 (Reuters) - The Israeli military may arrest reservists who have pledged not to report for duty as part of protests at the government's judicial overhaul plans, Army Radio reported on Thursday after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanded a crackdown. But Army Radio, a popular Israeli broadcaster managed by the Defence Ministry, said "a few hundred" reservists had announced they would refuse call-ups. Most of these are from the air force, Army Radio said. Sanctions being considered include arrest, suspension and dismissal, Army Radio said - but noted that, because air force reservists are designated as volunteers, they may be treated differently to reservists whose call-ups are obligatory. According to military data published by Globes newspaper in March, 4% of Israelis aged 22 to 45 are called up as reservists.
